If you are in the St Andrews area, prominent theologian N.T. Wright will be giving a public lecture in St Andrews September 14th, at 6:30pm in the Buchanan Building on Union Street. His talk is entitled “Kingdom, Power and Truth: God and Caesar Then and Now.” Admission is free. More information can be found here. It should interesting.

As Duncan Pritchard announced on Certain Doubts, Allen Hazlett will be leaving Forham for a Lecturship in Epistemology at the University of Edinburgh. Hazlett (who works in epistemology, metaphysics, and aesthetics) should be a good addition to Edinburgh’s blossoming department.

…can be found here. With the troubling news of a federal judge upholding the expulsion of Julea Ward from her graduate counseling program because of her Christian convictions, such an update is a bit more encouraging.

is here.

I just discovered via The Prosblogion that video from the Alvin Plantinga Retirement Conference can be found here. For people overseas who were unable to go to this (epic) event, this is exciting news… I’m excited anyway.

The story is here along with the initial email that sparked the controversy and the student’s email to the head of the department. It will be interesting to see how the university handles this case. What complicates this matter even more is the fact that Professor Howell not only lost his adjunct position at UI, but also lost his position at St. John’s Catholic Newman Center given that the latter position was contingent on his teaching at UI.

Roger Scruton (aesthetics, moral philosophy, political philosophy) has accepted an offer for a quarter-time Professorial Fellow in Moral Philosophy at the University of St Andrews. To quote the announcement, “Professor Scruton will spend half a semester each year in St Andrews, teaching classes, advising research students, participating in the philosophical life of St Andrews – including our Centre for Ethics, Philosophy and Public Affairs – and engaging in public outreach.” His first visit will be in the Spring of 2011.

In my estimation, this is a big win for St Andrews. Having done quite well in the last RAE, I’d imagine Scruton’s presence will help assure St Andrews’ continued success in the new REF.

An aside: The 2010 Gifford Lectures (held in St Andrews) were given by Roger Scruton – on the theme “The Face of God.” More information (and the audio recordings) can be found here.
